Murray outfoxes Maloney at the deadline, fends off local press

Reprinted with permission from hockeybuzz.com

Sabres beat writer Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News has been railing against a perceived be tank-job by the Buffalo organization for quite some time. Back on January 31st he penned an article, Sabres are disgusting, all right, that aptly and bluntly captured his dismay .At the time Harrington was not amused by the Sabres road to the top of the 2015 NHL Draft. He wrote of the Edmonton Oilers having "a lot of road trips" the rest of the season while the Arizona Coyotes, he wrote, "have a lot of trades to make" if they were thinking of overtaking the Sabres for last place.

Buffalo had just finished an 0-fer January and was on a franchise record 14-game losing streak. "Hockey folks are laughing at the product the Sabres have put on the ice," he wrote, "but much worse they're laughing at the organization itself and that's not how it's supposed to be going."

Sabres GM Tim Murray was sitting on his hands during this debacle leaving head coach Ted Nolan with very little on the ice and even less to say post-game save for "these are the 20 guys we have," and "we've got what we got." Harrington was so disgusted that it only took him a one paragraph lead-in before he wrote, "I think it's safe to call right now. The Buffalo Sabres are the worst team in the NHL by a lot at this point. They're going to finish 30th and get Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel.

"You may call it mission accomplished. But the mission doesn't need to be an open disgrace."

On Vanek, The Buffalo News and McDavid

Former Buffalo Sabres winger Thomas Vanek hit the ice last night for his new team, the NY Islanders. He did not hit the scoresheet, but was credited with one shot, two hits and 19 minutes of ice-time as the Isles dropped a 3-2 decision to the cross-town rival Rangers.

No reason to fret, Isles fans. Soon enough he'll show that he actually has some wheels, can back-check, won't be found cheating in the defensive zone and will be putting up points in bunches.

That's the way he rolls.

When all things come together, Vanek will marvel fans with his slapshot, tip-ins and deft passing and he will look as if he should be one of the highest paid players in the league. Then...

Usually around this time he'll slip into a slump, probably because a nagging injury that will keep him in and out of the line up short-term.

That's Thomas Vanek and that's why I'm glad that he reportedly rejected a Sabres offer to make him the highest paid player in the league.

Thank you, Thomas. You go follow that money trail somewhere else.

The Buffalo News still hating on Regier.

The above link on the offer to Thomas Vanek from the Sabres came from the Buffalo News' Jon Vogl, a good solid hockey writer.

But.

What seemed to do was subtly take a swipe at the Sabres organization. Not to defend what GM Darcy Regier has done at times, but this was a good move. Clearly Vanek didn't want to stay in Buffalo during a long rebuild. Here's what he wrote:

"Thomas Vanek could have been paid handsomely to stay in Buffalo. A source, in fact, says the Sabres were willing to make him the highest-paid player in the NHL.
He'd rather win than take part in a rebuild, which has been his message since last season."

Of course he would, Jon. What player worth his salt wouldn't? At the end of the season, Vanek will be able to make money and pick his team.

It could be that I took it all wrong with that Vogl line, but there's no mistaking what Bucky Gleason of the News' was getting at when he penned, Good Vanek deal won't cover Regier' mistakes.

The Ol' Buckster busted out the knitting needles once again. The wanna-be GM/Sports writer who has "all the answers" finally, begrudgingly gave Regier some credit. Only it was cloaked in a piece that continues to dredge up mostly some bad moments in Regier's 17-year history as GM of the Sabres.

He writes that he could "do this (rag on Regier) all day." Yes, Buckster, we know that, you've been doing it for years now. And there's a lot that's agreeable about your ragging, pre-2012.

But may I add, Bucky, the "good Vanek trade" was after the:
  • Great Pominville trade and
  • Pretty Damn Good Leopold and Regehr trades and
  • the Solid Roy trade and
  • the Very, Very Good, Possible Steal, Hodgson trade and
  • the Unfathomably Lopsided, Freakin' Awesome Gaustad trade
Owner Terry Pegula doesn't care about anything before February 22, 2011. He and his charges are taking a mulligan on the foolishness that transpired between then and April, 2012.

Sorry Buckster. Get over yourself. This is the direction the team is going and Regier's in charge of the return on his core players. It's all Pegula cares about right now.

Fret not thou, thy champion of the Bucky Gleason Knitting Society, Regier will be gone soon enough. After he's finished dismantling his core while hording two more years of draft picks.

TSN's McKenzie:  The rest of the (Vanek/Moulson) story.

There was more to the Vanek/Matt Moulson trade that met the eye.

Accoding to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the Buffalo Sabres will retain a portion of Vanek's salary as part of the deal with the NY Islanders. The amount is somewhere around $1.4m.

In addition, McKenzie reported that the 2014 1st round pick the Sabres are to receive is conditional.

Isles GM Garth Snow protected himself:  if the Islanders finish in the bottom-10 in the league, they will have the option "to defer the first round pick to 2015."

There's not a Sabres' fan around that wouldn't mind defering. They want the opportunity to possibly gain another first round pick in the 2015 draft. The Connor McDavid Draft, so to speak.

Looking ahead to the 2015 Draft (yes, already.)

With the Sabres falling to the bottom of the heap this season, unless something weird happens, they will end up with at least a top-five and probably will end up in the top-three pick in the 2014 draft.

Even though it's said to be a thin draft, there is almost always high quality at the very top of the every draft.

But, 2015 has phenom Connor McDavid.

Yeah, yeah, you might say. There's always a lot of hype for a top pick in any sport.

When it comes to hockey, though, they're usually right. When the scouts say this guy will be next in line after Sidney Crosby and Mario Lemieux--a franchise altering center--they're usually on target or really not that far off if they miss.

The National Post covered McDavid as he skated with some of the NHL's best back in August. The overall feeling on McDavid was amazement with the question, "How old is this kid?"

He's 16 yrs. old and he has a good opportunity to make Canada's World Junior Team. If he does make it he will join the likes of joining Wayne Gretzky, Sidney Crosby, Eric Lindros, Jason Spezza and Jay Bouwmeester.

Scouts have been marvelling at McDavid's skills and although his 5'11" 170 frame will need to fill out a bit, Kris Baker of sabresprospects.com thinks it will and projects McDavid at about 6', 190 lbs. "He'll be like MacKinnon," he said. MacKinnon is presently 6' 185 lbs.

Sounds good to me.

With the Sabres in rebuild mode, maybe it's time to start thinking about stockpiling up some 2015 1st-rounders to increase the odds of landing him.

beware of bucky and his influence

soooo...i'm listening to wgr yesterday, pretty excited about the thursday news conference...what sabres fan wouldn't be, right?...annnnndddd...mike schopp is talking with paul hamilton, the reporter who broke the story...annnnddddd...it's a good conversation...and all involved are trying not to get overly excited or overly speculative...

fine...

a little over half-way into the segment, they're talking about terry pegula's passion for hockey and schopp quantifies it with this, "this guys in the paper being mad about letting tallinder go"...ok, where did this come from?...

well, a caller had mentioned it...in fact over the course of yesterday, i'd heard callers mention that a few times, stating as historical fact that pegula was, indeed, ticked about the off-season tallinder situation...

and where did the callers get this stuck in their heads, pray-tell?...none other than the buckster himself, bucky gleason...

it all stems from a, generally, pretty good background article he wrote on december 2, 2010, sabres' owner-in-waiting comes across as a buffalo kind of guy...according to the buckster, it was culled from conversations from "anonymous sources" close to pegula...keep in mind that nothing has come directly from pegula or his camp...nothing...

soooo...the buckster gives us some background, then some speculation as to a possible pegula interest in the buying the bills (apparently gleason's dream?)...then, inevitably, gleason re-opens old wounds and fortifies it with a new, more recent quinn/regier-era catastrophe', "[pegula] was upset when Chris Drury and Daniel Briere left the organization. He couldn't comprehend how the team let Henrik Tallinder get away because he wanted a four-year contract rather than the three-year deal it offered"...

really?..."couldn't comprehend"?...like you and pegula had talked about it and this is a direct quote?...

the "anonymous blogger" has many
"sources" feeding him
"credible" information as well
once again, no one has interviewed pegula or any of his inner-circle...all the buckster has to go on is conversations with people who do not speak for pegula...all he has are anonymous sources...and we all know what can be done with anonymous sources...

the thing that ticks me off (and i addressed it on this blog as well as in one of his chats) was how pegula was depicted as angry and/or frustrated through an incredulous reaction to the mention of drury, briere and now hank tallinder...all of this gathered through second, third or even distant parties who will remain anonymous...

if you read bucky enough, you'll be able to sift through his articles and separate fact from opinion...on many occasions (which will be documented from here-on-in) you may notice that between the lines lies a hidden agenda, and/or animosity lurking just below the surface and/or speculation written to be taken as gospel...

bucky isn't stupid...he can string together thoughts and put them on paper rather well...he is sports reporter for a one-newspaper town...nothing more, nothing less...if someone wants to follow him off a cliff...go right ahead...

(shrugs)...caveat emptor...

~~~~~~~~~~
i like the fact that paul hamilton broke the buffalo sabres thursday press conference concerning the sale of the buffalo sabres...
as the beat reporter for the sabres on wgr, hamilton is about as close to the team as you can get...he's there at practice, there for the games, there in the locker room doing interviews with players...and there's a lot to be said for that...
i don't agree with everything he says, but for the amount of content he produces he manages to maintain a solid level of objectivity...sure, his opinion does make it's way into his material, but i've never really got the impression that he's being underhanded, vindictive or malicious with his opinions...
~~~~~~~~~~

the press conference on thursday is big news...the sale of the sabres to terry pegula is looked at as a welcome change for "long-suffering" sabres fans who've gone through 40 years of ups and downs, near misses and prolonged failures...although i really don't want to put pegula into "the savior" category--because i don't believe in saviors--it's a huge step forward for an organization that , lately, hasn't been able to combine a desire to win with the financial resources (among other things) to get the job done...

knit-one, purl-two nominee #3

a look at some really crabby, whiny, sourpuss content from major media sources in the buffalo area concerning the bills and the sabres

***nominee #3--bucky gleason, buffalo news, january 19, 2011***

the set-up:  the buffalo sabres come out on top in a 2-1 overtime victory at home vs. the montreal canadians...the habs are above the sabres in the standings and have beaten the sabres in the three previous meetings...the sabres have played well in 2011 going 5-2-1 thus-far, but are stuck in a win-one/lose-one scenario...they dug themselves a deep hole in october, and although they've hit the "visual-500-mark," they have yet to get above it...derek roy is out for the season, the defense is inconsistent, many players are either inconsistent or not contributing at all, top-line holes need to be filled and nothing will happen with the team until terry pegula signs on the bottom line...nothing new, but leave it to bucky to continue to sledgehammer these points home...

The cold truth is victory means little

"Terry Pegula remains on track to purchase the Buffalo Sabres, but don't fool yourself into thinking sweeping changes and immediate fixes are coming soon. He's not expected to be introduced as owner during NHL board of governors meetings before the All-Star Game, as many had hoped.

Step away from the panic button. The $175 million sale hasn't hit any major snags that would kill a complex transaction that takes time. Sources suggested in recent days he'll likely close on the purchase in February. And if you've been watching this season you know the Sabres aren't going, well, anywhere.

Was it me or did the Sabres' 2-1 overtime victory over the Montreal Canadiens feel like an unseasonably warm January day in which you enjoy the weather for a few hours knowing darned well 15 degrees and snow are around the corner? It was little more than a brief reprieve, a welcome break, right?

Let's start with the good news. The Sabres moved within eight points of Atlanta for the final playoff spot. They beat a Montreal team that has been battling with Boston for first place in the division. They came up with an inspiring effort in the third period. Ryan Miller was terrific in net. They deserved the win.

Nathan Gerbe played one of his best games all year. He was a general nuisance in the third period while tussling with Brian Gionta in a battle of featherweights. He irritated Scott Gomez enough to draw a high-sticking penalty that led to Jason Pominville's winner in overtime.

All were good signs, but let's also face reality. The Sabres have won six of nine games over the past three weeks yet have made up only two points in the standings. They have 45 points in 45 games. If they win five of nine over the final 37 games this season, which is a tall order for a .500 team, it's not likely to be enough to reach the postseason.

If anyone should have been celebrating after the game, it was Montreal. The Habs were short two forwards for nearly 56 minutes, were without three forwards for most of the game, played Monday night before traveling to Buffalo, managed to scratch out a point against a division opponent and almost took two.

Enjoy the win, Sabres fans, but don't lose sight of the fact that they remain a flawed team that needs work. Really, what can you say at this point, that Jochen Hecht is on the verge of busting out and carrying this team to the playoffs? He's now their No. 1 center between Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville.

Hecht has seven goals and 17 points this season and is making $3.5 million. His performance Tuesday, in which he had four glorious scoring chances and converted none in 19-plus minutes, has become the rule rather than the exception this season. He's reached a point where he couldn't bury a rumor.

And he's their best center? Yes.

Tim Connolly is on pace for 12 goals and 39 points. Take away the games he missed from injuries and calculate his production per game over a full season, and Connolly is trudging toward 15 goals and 47 points and a minus-30 rating. He makes $4.5 million. Cody McCormick, at $4 million less, has been more productive at even strength.

Hecht is headed for 12 goals and 30 points. Paul Gaustad is on pace for seven goals and 25 points. Rob Niedermayer still hasn't scored in 36 games. The Sabres weren't counting on him for 20 goals, but you can safely assume they were banking on scoring more than zero at this stage of the season.

The Sabres travel to Boston on Thursday before playing three games against teams currently behind them in the playoffs. Buffalo also is staring down the barrel of a seven-game road trip in March. By then, Pegula should be the owner. That's when the excitement begins."

wow, buckster...tell us something we didn't already know...ya ever hear of that old "beat a dead horse" expression?...we all know that darcy regier is lame as a gm and that tim connolly is invisible...jochen hecht?...really?...when in doubt bring out hecht, strap him to the yard-arm anc commence whipping...eh, bucky?..."Enjoy the win, Sabres fans, but don't lose sight of the fact that they remain a flawed team that needs work"...wow, dude...your insight is, like, overwhelming...i had no idea that the sabres were a flawed team...

this edition of the sabres is, indeed, flawed...they also dug themselves a very deep hole back in october and are close to reaching the surface...you think this victory means little to them?...you ever take a stick to the face to win anything?...maybe you had a pencil thrown at you or a lousy article you wrote crumpled into a ball and heaved back at you...ooooohhhhhh!!!!...scary....the only thing missing from this article is a reference/tie-in to drury/briere and tim kennedy to enrage the "buckites"...whatever...the sabres, as a team are trying to beat down a door and break into the playoff mix, despite being flawed and despite being written-off/bagged-on by the media

some background on terry pegula from bucky gleason

terry pegula
buffalo news columnist bucky gleason worked the phones for some background info on potential sabres buyer terry pegula...overall a very good piece with pegula coming off as a "buffalo kind of guy"...

sure looks that way as gleason has his sources use words like, "honest," "blue-collar," "down-to-earth," and "loyal"...one source says that "people will identify with him up [in buffalo]"...nice...

it's a long piece, that is hopeful, exuberant, and very optimistic...but, as with bucky, there always seems to be an opinionated poke at management, and here's how he slides it in...throughout the piece he uses quotes from his sources, yet in this paragraph, there's nothing that denotes a quote from either his sources or from pegula himself:

"He was upset when Chris Drury and Daniel Briere left the organization. He couldn't comprehend how the team let Henrik Tallinder get away because he wanted a four-year contract rather than the three-year deal it offered."

the drury/briere thing has been a constant for gleason as he berates management for its utter failure in this matter...and that's fine...but to say that the potential new owner was "upset" with the way it was handled and then to follow up with how "he couldn't comprehend" the hank tallinder situation without attributing it to a source is somewhat underhanded...it's a slick way to interject his opinion and have it become part of the background of the subject...

i brought this up during his chat yesterday and asked him to clarify and his rebuttal was, "No, I don't care to clarify. What I wrote was accurate."

what he wrote (and writes) has an influence upon his immediate audience in the buffalo area as well as a national audience as the sale of a professional franchise is national sports/business news...jerry sullivan on the howard simon show this morning said, concerning pegula, "just to have a guy like that who would be a fan...and is, like concerned that they, he agrees with me that they [inaudible] signed tallinder was a bad idea."

so pegula agrees with sullivan and gleason and we're to believe this because what gleason wrote was "accurate" even though no source was named?...

i've seen bucky do this before and i don't buy what he's selling...stick to the facts, bucky, and don't put words in other peoples mouths, no matter how disdainful you are of management or how much your ego needs to be fed...it ain't right

sisyphus' boulder is rolling downhill again..

and everybody has a reason, thought or opinion as to why...

here's a compilation of articles and such concerning the sabres as they welcome the change of the calender, with a game vs. a very stingy tim thomas and the boston bruins at home tonight...

Buffalo Sabres fans

#2

his reasoning?..."Buffalo Sabres: (Listen Here) The horn sounds like an express train pointed at your living room window, and it segues right into an air raid siren. The song they use is "Hell Yeah" by Rev Theory. The whole thing works, and makes us angry that so many of the Sabres' forwards are underachievers."
--a positive aspect (albeit unrelated to the sabres on-ice play) to a horrendous season thus-far, yet a quick truism to finish with ...

while reading on, i offer the following track off of brian eno/david byrne's, my life in the bush of ghosts, entitled, help me somebody as a musical prelude:

  • matt reitz, from the cheap seats, does a fine job of analyzing this season's sophomore slump poster-child--tyler myers...from the loss of hank tallinder to myers trying to do too much, a myriad of factors has myers plummeting to the bottom of the plus/minus category and the effect it has on the team...should have added that he's had a number of different d-partners since shaone morrison went down and that he's also carrying 15 extra pounds and an extra inch of height...but...all-in-all, he makes some good points
  • the sabres parade to the penalty box the past few games has lead to loads of trouble on a team with a poor pk...john vogl of the buffalo news starts off an article on the pk with this, "It seems like pretty simple logic. If a team is struggling on the penalty kill, it probably shouldn't take a lot of penalties"...pretty simple, perhaps the players should take note
  • mike schopp on gr continues his "i really think lindy ruff should be held responsible (read fired) for the demise of the sabres" charge and is shot down by paul hamilton, again, during a wgr roundtable...a couple of days later in his blog, he tempers his point by saying "i think there are three times to change coaches..." says that now is not the right time and finishes by saying, "But I also don't think Lindy Ruff ought to be on a de facto lifetime contract. I think over the years he's done a decent but not exceptional job...To be a great coach, doesn't your team have to overachieve? At least occasionally? Maybe last year's team did that"...in the last two or three years, he's rarely, if ever, mentioned that maybe the sabres don't have the talent his frequent guest, gm darcy regier, seems to think they have
  • schopp's on-air partner, bulldog, takes a broader view of the october buffalo sports scene adding in the sabres lousy home record with the 0-7 buffalo bills...his blog begins with, "october was a joke, right?"...not surprising, he likes the bills, as do many fans right now, much more than the sabres
  • the buffalo news', bucky gleason, basically says that regier is ultimately responsible as he's trying to find a scapegoat for the sabres woes, but, as we have seen, it's usually the coach who takes the fall...and his buffalo news colleague bob dicesare says the target's on ruff's back mostly for failing to motivate his team (an easy out, imo) concluding that ruff is pretty much dead in the water...not convinced that ruff is the problem, he concludes, "If the team fails to respond to a new coach then we'll at least know what is widely suspected -- that it was the personnel all along."
