Individual Stats For the Month of April

Time and again, Lindy Ruff has called upon his best players to be his best players.

The Sabres ended the month of March in 7th place with a very strong month. Problem was, the teams that they were battling with for a playoff spot were equal to the task. It set up a very interesting, short month of April to determine who would be in the post season and who would not.

A 4-0-1 record for the month of April put Buffalo in the 7th-spot as they head to the playoffs and the players that Ruff needed to step up, came through--Thomas Vanek, Jason Pomminville, Drew Stafford with a little help from Paul Gaustad, Nate Gerbe and Brad Boyes as well as Jhonas Enroth.

individual stats for the month of march

thomas vanek was in the top-two in scoring last month for the third straight month and is on pace to garner the most assists in his career while shooting for his fourth 30-goal season in the last five years (he had 28 goals last season)...

i bring this up because the injury to derek roy left an assistant captain spot open and vanek was given the reigns...he has been lauded for his all-around play for the sabres and rightfully so...the team entered january 12th in the conference and are now 7th...interesting to note that he pushed the glamour aside for the leadership role during that span...he was named 1st star once (in january,) 2nd star twice (both in february) and 3rd star three times (all in march)...during that span the team won 24 games...

the big-gun of the month, offense-wise, was nathan gerbe with seven goals, including a blistering rick martin-like slapshot as the team won just hours after the french connection legend passed away... andrej sekera also had a banner month leading the team with 15 points...

we can't dismiss rob niedermayer either  who finally scored a goal vs. minnesota on march 6th (a span of 53 games) and ended up with five goals on the month...

and finally, there's jhonas enroth who held the fort by going 3-0 for the month and won in a variety of ways:  overtime at minnesota, 6-4 vs. ottawa, and 1-0 vs. the ny rangers--a game which ended a very strong 10-4-2 month for the team...

a 6-4-2 month equals a .500 record and yielded 14 out of a possible 24 points...thanx to carolina faltering under a brutal schedule, florida and atlanta continuing their fall and the ny rangers having a below-average month, the sabres enter the month of march two points behind carolina for the eighth spot with two games in hand...they are also five points behind the ny rangers for the seventh spot with three games in hand...

they play two crucial post-trade-deadline, four-point games to kick off a seven-game road-trip...the first is in ny vs. the rangers tonight, then they travel to carolina to face the hurricane on thursday...

hmmmmm...december started out with a bang (4-1-1) but ended with a whimper (2-4-0)...going 6-5-1 for the month is a slight improvement, but nowhere near the pace they'll need to get into the playoffs...
