After the Sabres beat the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night Buffalo captain Jack Eichel talked of the media, "and probably himself," looking too frequently at the negative in what turned out to be a lost season for the team. Eichel and his Sabres teammates were coming off of a feel-good win on Fan Appreciation Night when he made those comments after a game that closed out the home schedule at KeyBank Center. The 5-2 win versus the last place Senators brought some relief to those in Sabreland who were left to watch four months of some pretty depressing hockey when it mattered most. Buffalo had only four wins each in December, January and February and to make matters worse they won a paltry two out of 16 games in the month of March.
While Eichel was stretching for positives, which included 21 wins at home, tying for the most since 2009-10, and some individual feats that we'll cover at a later date, the fact remains that team-wise they were as poor as, or worse than, the teams that came out of the tank years under then head coach Dan Bylsma. In his sophomore season as Sabres head coach, Phil Housley was dancing on air back in November when his team was on a 10-game winning streak but had no answers during a precipitous fall from that high in the ensuing months.
Here's WGR550 Sabres beat reporter Paul Hamilton on the morning show talking about what has transpired under Housley, an offensive-minded Hockey Hall-of-Fame player and the supposed mastermind behind the incredible Nashville defense of 2016-17 that ended up propelling the Predators to the Stanley Cup Final that year. "It's obvious [the players] don't understand Phil Housley," said a cut-and-dry Hamilton to the hosts, "I mean all you've got to do is watch the defensive zone. Every now and then they have a game where it looks like play well defensively, but basically you watch them in the defensive zone and they have no idea what they're doing or what they're supposed to be doing.
"It just seems like [Housley] doesn't change anything, like [he's saying] 'This is the system we're going to play and we're gonna keep practicing it until you guys get it.' Well, it's been two years and they really haven't gotten it."

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--March. Plus Kim Pegula quote
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 4-1-2019
Buffalo Sabres team president Kim Pegula was in Arizona last week, along with husband Terry, at the NFL owner's meeting talking about learning on the job. The Pegula family owns both the Sabres and the Buffalo Bills and Kim took over the team presidencies of both clubs when Russ Brandon left the organization last May. She was asked about a number of things concerning the two franchises including all the changes as of late that have gone on at Pegula Sports and Entertainment, the umbrella company of the Sabres and Bills of which she's the president and CEO. Kim Pegula admitted that they took on a lot while in the midst of an upper-level management restructuring and when asked just how challenging it was to take on all that responsibility she told the gathered media, "I think it's fun.
"C'mon, we're in sports," she continued with happiness running through her big smile. "There's nothing more fun than being involved in sports. I'm actually really enjoying it."
Good for her. She and the Pegula family should be very happy. Being an NFL owner is like having one of 32 ATM cards where a constant supply of profits generated from television revenue and merchandise means every year they can go to the teller and cash in. Without financial worries, it also allows her to learn on the job, something which she also touched upon. "It takes a while to understand your organization and knowing things like how we want things to be structured," she said. "It's a matter of wanting to put my own stamp, not just myself but Terry and I, on the organization, how we want it to be structured and run.
"I've talked to a lot of other teams around the league asking, 'how are you doing things?' And so for me it was part of the learning process. Once Russ [Brandon] departed it has allowed me, it's just part of the whole progression of how we want things to be and how we want to make our own mark.

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--February
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 3-1-2019
Next season, the Buffalo Sabres should take a page out of former co-captain Chris Drury's book. Back in the 2005-07 seasons Drury suggested they have the standings posted on the entrance to the dressing room so everyone on the team could see where they stood. Posting something like this during the tank years of 2013-15 as well as last season it might have been counterproductive but during the other seasons it may have added a little emphasis to their drive to respectability and beyond.
The Sabres downward spiral continued last month as they were only able to put together enough to win four games. Their 4-7-2 overall record for February moved them even further from a playoff spot as it dropped them to sixth in the Atlantic Division, 12th in the Eastern Conference and 22nd in the League. Buffalo is eight points out a playoff spot with three teams to jump and we may as well add another point to their deficit as they're well behind when it comes to the first tie-breaker--regulation/overtime wins. The Sabres have 25 ROW while the least number by those presently in a wild card spot is 32.
It's going to take a miracle for them to make the playoffs. Hell, it might take a minor miracle for them to win two games in a row, something they haven't done since December 11-13.

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--January
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 2-1-2019
Before we get to the team stats through January, a quick look ahead at a very important stretch of games. The Sabres will be at KeyBank center for a seven-game homestand beginning tonight against the Chicago Blackhawks. Here's the rest of the schedule:
2-5---Minnesota Wild
2-7---Carolina Hurricanes
2-9---Detroit Red Wings
2-10--Winnipeg Jets
2-12--NY Islanders
2-15--NY Rangers
After that they'll play four more games before the February 25 NHL Trade Deadline and what happens between now and the 25th will have a direct impact on how Buffalo GM Jason Botterill will approach the deadline.
It all begins tonight against a Blackhawks team that has had their way with the Sabres. In their last 10 games Buffalo is only 1-6-3 against the Hawks, 2-6-2 at home. The Sabres pulled out a 5-3 win vs. Chicago at home last season and should they win tonight it will be the first time Buffalo has managed consecutive wins against the Blackhawks since winning three in a row between December 3, 2003 and December 15, 2007, according to Sabres PR.

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--December
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 1-1-2019
A lackluster month of December for Buffalo can basically be summed up by team stats from two categories. Entering the month the Sabres were tied for 14th in the league averaging 3.04 goals/game and their goals-against came in at 2.81, which was tied for 11th. Through December, Buffalo's goals/game dropped to 2.80 (22nd) while their goals-against came in at 2.85 (11th.)
The Sabres went 4-6-3 for the month and dropped from their spot amongst the leaders of the conference (and the NHL) down into the playoff mix. With 48 points they now only have a tenuous hold on third place in the division with three conference wild card teams no more than three points behind them nipping at their heels. In their six regulation losses Buffalo was outscored 22-8 while in their four wins they outscored their opponents 14-6 margin. Add in the three overtime/shootout losses and their minus-9 goal differential for the month puts them at zero on the season which pretty much matches their 21-13-6 overall record this season.

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--November
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 12-1-2018
When the final horn sounded at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida on Thursday night the Buffalo Sabres were on the wrong end of a 3-2 score and their franchise-tying 10-game winning streak had come to an end. Buffalo had not lost a game in nearly three weeks and it seemed as if they were running on pure adrenaline by the end of that game against the Lightning. Perhaps that's what 10 games in 20 days, with a three-game road trip and a couple of back-to-backs will do to a team that's still very young at it's core.
Where this Sabres team ends up moving forward remains to be seen but a run like that puts them in a fine position to end a playoff-drought that's lasted seven years.
The Sabres finished the month of October with two overtime losses and a five-game point streak (3-0-2) which turned into a three-game losing streak after a 4-2 loss at Ottawa to kick off November. The loss put them below the real .500-mark at 6-5-2 but two days later they smoked the Senators 9-2 in the second-game of a home-and-home. That big win vs. Ottawa sent them on the road with some confidence heading to the Big Apple to face off against goalie Henrik Lundqvist and the NY Rangers and though they peppered Lundqvist with 40 shots on goal that night, they lost 3-1. What followed would be an historic 10-game run that took Sabres from 18th in the league all the way to No. 1. No team in NHL history had led the league 25 games into the season after finishing the prior season in last place until the 2018-19 Sabres.

Buffalo Sabres 2018-19 Team Stats--October
Published by hockeybuzz.com, 11-1-2018
First off, congratulations to Sabres winger Jason Pominville who will be playing in his 1,000th NHL game tonight. Not bad for the rather slight (5'11" 180 lb.) native of Repentigny, Quebec who was drafted 55th overall by Buffalo in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft and was also waived by the team at the end of training camp prior to the 2005-06 season.
The Sabres were lucky in that no one claimed him and he went on to score 185 goals and 456 points in 578 games for Buffalo before being traded to the Minnesota Wild. Pominville spent four seasons in Minnesota before he was traded back to Buffalo in 2017. He'll join the 1,000-game club tonight as the Sabres take on the Senators in Ottawa.
Pominville's Sabres are off to a very solid start to this NHL season posting a 6-4-2 record through the month of October. A terrible second period at Columbus two games ago almost sunk them but they managed to comeback to get a point against the Blue Jackets and they wasted a brilliant performance by goalie Carter Hutton on Tuesday at home against Calgary. The Sabres lost a 1-0 lead with less than a minute to go in the third period, failed on the powerplay right off the bat in overtime then allowed the Flames to win it.
Although 7-4-1 looks a lot better, the team this year is better and definitively more watchable compared to what we saw last season and it shows in the overall team stats.
Buffalo is one of 11 teams with six wins placing them smack-dab in the middle of the league along with their 12 points. In looking back at where they finished the past five seasons listed here, that's a good start to the season.
October is one of those months were there are aberrations aplenty and the further we get into the season the more things level out. Buffalo is middle-of-the-road in most categories save for the goals area where they're lagging in shots/game (24th in the league,) goals/game (26th,) 5v5 goals (25th) and goal-differential (22nd.) The Sabres have balanced those deficiencies out somewhat on the defensive side of the equation with league rankings solidly in the mid-teens.
Buffalo has had an inconsistent start to the season which included a five-game, 10-day Pacific Division road trip and there have been a lot of inconsistencies. As we move through the next month or two this edition of the Buffalo Sabres will begin to reveal itself and hopefully we'll see them light the lamp a little more on offense and tighten up on defense.
But until then, we'll leave you with Pominville's most famous goal, his series-clinching short-handed, overtime winner against the Senators in Ottawa on May 13, 2006 (via jzambon):
