2011/12 Individual stats--March

Ryan Miller...Tyler Ennis/Drew Stafford/Marcus Foligno

That's all you really need to know when it comes to the month of March individually.

The team brought the goals against down and the goals for up thanks primarily to the four aforementioned players.

Miller had a stellar month going 10-3-2. He brought his gaa down to 2.51 and brought his save percentage up to .917. This despite signs of wear as he allowed four goals to both Pittsburgh and Toronto in their back-to-back losses to finish the month. Miller also had 2 shutouts setting a career high of six.

On offense, Lindy Ruff finally put Tyler Ennis in the pivot and surrounded him with two big bodies--Drew Stafford and Marcus Foligno.

The results from that line: 11games played, 20 goals, 24 assists and a combined plus-34. As seen in the plus/minus, this line did their damage 5-on-5.

Other than that, Jason Pominville continued his steady play, although his plus/minus took a beating for the month. Thomas Vanek slowly inched his way on tho the scoresheet more often and Cody Hodgson, who went pointless in the first nine games of the month came on strong with eight points in seven games with 2g and 2a on the powerplay.

On defense, the surprise of the month was Alexander Sulzer, the former Vancouver Canuck who came over with Hodgson on trade deadline day.

Sulzer has been a big surprise. In his 14 games with the Sabres he has 1g, 4a and is a plus-2. He had been paired with Christian Ehrhoff until the latter's injury and the German duo found instant chemistry.

Chemistry. That's the word for the month of March. With a healthy defense corps in front of him, Miller has found his Vezina form (quick note: both Ehrhoff did not play the last two games while Tyler Myers missed the last one.)

Sulzer and Ehrhoff allowed for some concrete pairings on the back-end:  Myers/Andrej Sekera, Robyn Regehr/Jordan Leopold.

Up-front the Ennis/Stafford/Foligno line clicked allowing the top-nine to be shuffled a bit with Hodgson centering Vanek and rookie Corey Tropp and Derek Roy between Pominville and Ville Leino.

The Sabres are still in the playoff picture, although they'll probably need to win out and will need some help along the way.

Make it or not, the Sabres have found some chemistry in crucial areas and will have a big jump on next season because of it.

2011/12 Individual Stats--January

That was painful. Easy, but painful.

Easy because the team only scored a grand total of 18 goals in 12 games for the month of January, painful because...it was an ugly month.

Jason Pominville continued to hold his own. Understated consistency is his trademark. He has 47 points through 50 games and is on a pace to match his career best year back in the 2007/08 season.

In other notes:
  • Thomas Vanek disappeared this month and will disappear from the line-up for an undetermined length of time as he starts out February injured.
  • Paul Gaustad had a very good month and seems to be picking it up.
  • Nathan Gerbe seems to be getting stronger.
  • Derek Roy looks like a player who doesn't want to play in Buffalo anymore
Three powerplay goals pretty much says it all about scoring and on the back-end, the goalies pretty much held their own but dropped in the rankings.

We'll see tonight if the team stopped the bleeding that started back in early November.

We'll also see how the team does without it's leading goal scorer in Vanek.

2011/12 Individual Stats--December

If you thought watching the Sabres play this past month was painful, the stats might be even more painful.

Thomas Vanek and
Jason Pominville should sue
their teammates for
non-support this season.
(thanx to madcow for the photo)
Take out Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville and you have the makings of a league bottom-feeder. The duo is tops on the Sabres not matter who's centering them and both are in the top-ten in a few different scoring categories.

After that the drop off is definitive as secondary scoring evaporated.

When we looked at the team yesterday, five-on-five play took a precipitous drop, looking at the individual plus/minus, no player was spared save for Marc-Andre Gragnani who was the only player in the plus column at plus-3. Zero and below for the rest of the team.

Goaltending didn't help. December saw Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth gift-wrap many a goal for the opposition and their year to date stats continue downward.

Add it all up and you have a team that went a paltry 4-7-3 for the month and find themselves in 11th place in the Eastern Conference. It's a similar situation to last season and nearly every season since 2007.

They begin the new year with the task of climbing up and into a playoff spot, and with the way they've looked lately--1-5-1 to end December, one goal scored in seven of the last 17 games--it's a monumental task for this club.

A look at how individual Sabres have done during the month of November.

2011/12 Individual Stats--November

For the second half of November, the Buffalo Sabres looked like they were fielding what looked like a preseason lineup due to an unprecedented rash of injuries. Goalie Ryan Miller, defensemen Tyler Myers and Mike Weber as well as forwards Brad Boyes, Pat Kaleta and Cody McCormick all had extended stays on the injured list. Forward Tyler Ennis spent the whole month recovering from an ankle injury while defenseman Robyn Regehr and forward Drew Stafford missed a game.

Add it all up and it made for NHL ice-time for a bevvy of Rochester Americans. Journeyman goalie, Drew MacIntyre got the call as backup for Jhonas Enroth making his Buffalo Sabres debut in a couple of mop-up roles. Forward Paul Szczechura, aka, "Chewy" (via Lindy Ruff,) also had his debut for the Sabres. Forward Corey Tropp and defenseman TJ Brennan, two players who've spent one and two years, respectively, in the AHL also made their Sabres debut.

Former 1st-round pick Zack Kassian and 3rd-round pick Brayden McNabb hit the F'N Center ice for the first time as well in their first professional seasons.

The Rochalo Sabericans.

For the amount of injuries incurred, the Sabres did a fairly decent job, save for the last two of three games where they lost to bottom-feeders--the Columbus Blue Jackets and NY Islanders--scoring only one goal in each game.

Whereas the term, "as Ryan Miller goes, so go the Sabres" was the mantra for previous seasons, last month it was more about Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville carrying the load with the mantra, "as secondary scoring goes, so goes the Sabres."

Jhonas Enroth has been a revelation in his backup role for over a year, but he came down to earth when thrust into the starting role. The Sabres, who seemed to up their two-way game when he was in net as backup, returned to a more inconsistent form with him as a starter.

Derek Roy started out the month strong, with the team going 5-2-0, but disappeared in the latter portion of the month and with secondary scoring virtually disappearing, the Sabres to ended the month 2-4-1.

Thomas Vanek continues to put up points as does Jason Pominville. Vanek is presently ranks 4th in the league in points (27) and is tied for 7th in goals (12) while Pominville's 17 assists are tied for 6th.

Luke Adam is having a solid rookie campaign. He's third in points (16,) third in goals (8,) and fourth in assists (8) amongst rookies. Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has separated himself for Rookie Of the Year honors thus-far, but Adam is acquitting himself very well two months into the season.

A look at how individual Sabres have done during the month of November.

2011/12 Individual Stats--October

The Buffalo Sabres left the month of October in markedly better shape this year as opposed to last season. Of course we all should remember the horror that was last season, the team went 3-7-2 for the month and were at or near the bottom of the eastern conference.

This season, though, the team is off to a 6-4 start. Not bad overall, but pretty sad considering that they were 5-1 before a homestand that saw them go 1-3.

Individually, Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville are smokin' hot. Vanek is second in the league in points (15) and fourth in goals (8) while Pominville is tied for sixth in points (14) and tied for fifth in assists (9.) They've been playing so well that rookie Luke Adam, who was centering their line for the month, is tied for second in rookie points with nine and tied for first in assists with six.

All that will be changing, at least to start the new month, as it's been reported that Ville Leino will be centering Vanek and Pominville in order to jumpstart his poor production (1g, 1a.) Adam, for his part will be heading over to the left wing with Derek Roy and Drew Stafford, both of whom have gotten off to slow starts.

Lindy Ruff has some work to do as he sorts out his lines to get things going for certain individuals (Leino.) He already worked a little magic with Brad Boyes. Since Ruff put Boyes on the first unit PP three games ago, the forward has responded with a goal and two assists on that unit.

Nathan Gerbe is off to a much better start this year over last. Tyler Ennis did not register a point in the seven games he played in before being injured. Oddly enough, the Sabres went 5-2 with him in the line-up and he seems to have leaned towards the Selke Trophy end of the equation by registering a +2.

On defense, Christian Ehrhoff is working on getting his shot off while missing asignments on d. He has one goal and is a team-worst minus-6. Tyler Myers has not gotten off of the schneid, although this seaason he's clocking in with a plus-1. Last season he was scraping the bottom and ended the month of October a minus-10.

Robyn Regehr was brought in for a little stay-at-home stabilization. He's done that going zero's across the board including the +/-. He was also brought in to rattle some opposition bones with thundering checks and my oh my, has he done that.

Interesting to note that the not one defensman was named one of the game's 3-stars yet.

Goaltending has been very solid. Ryan Miller is ahead of his Vezina-2010 pace, and back-up Jhonas Enroth has given Ruff the opportunity to focus on other areas as the second-year netminder has worked a little magic on his way to a 2-0 start.

It's a long 82-game hockey season, but 10 games in here are the Sabres individual stats leaders for the month of October.
