2014-15 Team Stats--March

Reprinted with permission from hockeybuzz.com

Before we get to the team stats for March, the Sabres organization signed RIT senior forward Matt Garbowsky to an amateur tryout contract with the Rochester Americans, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle's Kevin Oklobzija.

The 5'10" 190 lb. center captained the Tigers to an Atlantic Hockey Conference championship this season and a spot in the NCAA Tournament where they upset #1-seed Minnesota State University-Mankato 2-1. Garbowsky had an assist on RIT's first goal when he took on a hard check along the boards but got the puck to teammate Alexander Kuqali who took it to the front of the net and scored on the backhand. With just under six minutes left in the third he barreled to the front of the net causing an MSU-Mankato defenseman to take out his own goalie. Linemate Josh Mitchell scored the game-winner on the play.

According to Kris Baker of sabresprospects.com/sabres.com, Garbowsky is a "jack of all trades, great on draws and diligent in the defensive zone." Although he was one of the top scorers in the NCAA with 26 goals and 54 points, Atlantic Hockey isn't quite on par with some of the other big-name colleges. Baker says that "teams want to see more high-end play before fully committing" to a pro contract.

The Sabres still have their eyes on one more college player, Boston University goalie, Matt O'Connor. Unlike Garbowsky who had only one other offer, O'Connor has many teams interested in his services. BU will be in the Frozen Four April 9-11. Should they make it to the finals, that game will coincide with the Sabres last game of the season. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and how the Sabres plan to lure him to Buffalo.

2014-15 Team Stats--February

Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray has stated time and again that he wants to see the team progress and wants to see improvement in his players.

"Progress" and "improvement" are broad terms and their definitions can vary wildly, even within the organization. John Vogl of the Buffalo News writes that the schism between Murray and head coach Ted Nolan is widening, "The philosophical differences between Tim Murray and Ted Nolan have raised questions about the coach’s future," wrote Vogl this morning. "Using football injury terms, Nolan ranges from questionable to doubtful. Some have already downgraded him to out." In layman's terms, Vogl says the coach went from having a 50% chance of getting canned to 75%.

Although I'm of the opinion that for this season any progress from a team standpoint should be minute, perhaps others feel that this team should be much farther along and winning more games. There's confusion emanating from the foot of Washington St. as to just what kind of job Nolan has done thus far. Has he done a great job with the limited talent he's been given? Did he loose his team at some point in December causing them to tumble to the bottom of the league? Will Murray "manipulate" his team's standing at the deadline by shipping out every last bit of talent he can by 3pm tomorrow?

And just what is those "philosophical differences" Vogl is alluding to?

2014-15 Team Stats--January

Reprinted with permission from hockeybuzz.com

It's a good thing the NHL had the All-Star game in January as it allowed the Buffalo Sabres an eight-day hiatus. Were it not for that break, the team may have added one or two more losses to an 0-12-0 month of January. During a wretched month they managed to obliterate the previous franchise mark for futility which stood at eight losses in a row set between January 25 and February 13, 2003.

I remember that 2002-03 season as well as last season when they finished with a league-low 21 wins, 52 points and a minus-91 goal differential. For 2013-14 the Sabres were last in shots/game (26.3) and goals/game (1.83) but were 29th or better in the other team stats, most notably goals against (2.96) thanks in large part to goalie Ryan Miller.

Miller was traded to the St. Louis Blues at the 2014 deadline then signed a free agent contract with the Vancouver Canucks in the off season. He was in net on Friday as the Sabres finished an 0-fer month of January with a 5-2 loss in Vancouver. With the victory over Buffalo, Miller would have the distinction of defeating all 30 NHL teams.

2014-15 Team Stats--December

Reprinted with permission from hockeybuzz.com

First off, Happy New Year everybody.

The Buffalo Sabres followed 6-6-1 record for the month of November with a very similar 6-7-1 record in December and just like the previous month it was a tale of two halves.

Buffalo followed up a strong 5-1-0 finish in November by going 5-2-0 to kick off last month. After that it was pretty much all down hill.

2014-15 Team Stats--November

That the Sabres got shellacked through the first 18 games of the 2014-15 season shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Buffalo faced powerhouses from both conferences featuring games against LA, Chicago, Anaheim (twice,) St. Louis, Pittsburgh (twice) and Boston. Also thrown into the mix were playoff teams from last year--Minnesota, Columbus, Detroit and Montreal. There was also perennial western power San Jose' but the Sabres have their number for some reason.

With the team smack dab in the middle of a rebuild and 14 of their first 18 games against strong opponents, it's no wonder Buffalo went 3-13-2 during that stretch.

2014-15 Team Stats--October

Reprinted with permission from hockeybuzz.com

The Buffalo Sabres hit Pittsburgh tonight for a tilt with the Penguins before returning home tomorrow to take on the Detroit Red Wings. In the process they hope to say goodbye to an ugly start to the season. (For posterity's sake, Buffalo was 1-9-1 after 11 games, 2-12-1 to for the month of October.)

For as bad as October was to open the season, there is a bright spot. The Sabres have a top-10 penalty kill unit allowing only six goals on 41 opportunities for a 85.4 kill percentage. And in a tribute to how well the goalies have played, despite giving up a league-high 36.7 shots per game, their team goals against comes in at 3.27, good for 21st in the league.
