It's early April and for the seventh consecutive season the Monday after the regular season ends means locker cleanout day for the Buffalo Sabres. Their 62 points on a 25-45-12 record once again placed them last in the league.
Below are five years of team stats for this team as the organization decided that tanking for a top pick was the route they were going to take. For two seasons the Sabres were set up to be at the bottom of the league and sure enough, they ended up there in a big way. Although the NHL Lottery dropped them to second overall in both drafts they got their top picks in Sam Reinhart (2014) and Jack Eichel (2015.)
What the Sabres have been unable to do in the three seasons since the "Jack Eichel-era" began was ditch those losing ways. Buffalo showed massive year-over-year progress in Eichel's first season, but the wheels began to fall off in 2016-17. General Manger Tim Murray and head coach Dan Bylsma were both dismissed and the team brought in a new GM in Jason Botterill and a new coach in Phil Housley.
Despite being rookies in their new found positions there was a lot of optimism with the hiring of Botterill and Housley, but that soon obliterated by an 0-4-1 start which included two embarrassing blowout losses and a 3-7-2 month of October. The slow start turned into a train wreck and Sabres were out of it by Thanksgiving. They wouldn't have a decent month until February when they went 6-6-2.
In looking over the team stats from the past five seasons, not a lot has changed. They still can't seem to score as they've never placed higher than 24th in the league in goals-for. Five-on-five goals are even worse as the Sabres have never finished higher than 28th.
If you can't score goals as a team it's best you stop them and Buffalo spent three seasons near the bottom of the league in that category finishing in last place every time. They had two good seasons under Bylsma where they finished 15th and 19th overall in goals-against. Those two seasons also showed their best goal differential of -21 in 2015-16 and -36 in 2016-17.
Housley has been preaching a "shot-mentality" all season and the team did well in averaging 31.2 shots/game which ranked 20th in the league. Shooting the puck hasn't been a problem since the tank years as the Sabres finished in the middle of the league under Bylsma's two seasons.
Bylsma also had Buffalo's powerplay cranking. After spending the two tank seasons at or near the bottom of the league they went to 12th in 2015-16 and all the way up to first in 2016-17. However, that lone bright spot in an otherwise dreadful stat page was destroyed early in the season as the Sabres fell to 30th through the first half of the season before they rebounded to finish 20th overall.
There's a heaviness to the numbers below and a reciprocal value that has the players struggling under the weight of losing for so many years while the lack of overall talent has kept those numbers down leading to even more losing.
The Buffalo Sabres will have another high pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, but as we've seen from a number of teams recently, most notably the Edmonton Oilers but not to dismiss the Florida Panthers (2011-14) or the Colorado Avalanche (2009-13 plus No. 4 overall in 2017,) high picks don't necessarily mean immediate success.
Edmonton busted their cycle of losing two years after drafting the heir to Sidney Crosby as the best player in the game in Connor McDavid. Yet, after making it to the second round last season, they fell back to a more familiar spot in the lower third of the league. The Avalanche finished dead last by a wide margin last year but made the playoffs this season with a couple of their top-two picks leading the way. And while the Panthers missed the playoffs for the second year running, they didn't miss by much as their team continues to mature with three, top-three draft picks leading the way.
Botterill has a lot of work to do heading into this off season. His and Housley's first season was an unmitigated disaster which more than likely was unintended. The second year GM has been trying to change the culture of the organization and he's got the Rochester Americans headed in the right direction which is a much easier task than changing it at the NHL level.
For most, if not all, off Buffalo's unrestricted free agents today represents the last day they'll be in the Sabres locker room. And for anyone outside of, maybe three players--Eichel, Brendan Guhle and Casey Mittelstadt--the possibility is there that they could also be clearing out their lockers in Buffalo for the last time.
That's what losing does. It demands change.
Today the players and Housley will speak and on Wednesday Botterill will have his end of season presser. Despite one of the worst seasons in Sabres history, many believe that he has a plan and we'll here more of that as he's grilled by the local media.

Buffalo Sabres 2017-18 Team Stats--March

It was a helluva way to end the month of March for the Buffalo Sabres. Although seven goals and four powerplay goals in one game at this time of year doesn't move the needle too much, the Sabres can take heart in knowing that they defeated the Nashville Predators,the best team in the league, on the road by a 7-4 score and showed a little resiliency in the process.
The Sabres powerplay was nothing short of fantastic last night as they scored on four of nine powerplays which moved their season percentage up almost a full point. Buffalo went into the game scoring on 40 of 232 powerplay opportunities (17.2%) and left with 44 PPG on 241 opportunities (18.3%.) Buffalo scored three powerplay goals last night during a five minute major penalty handed out to the Preds Scotty Hartnell for boarding Victor Antipin, who left the ice on a stretcher, and they went from a 4-3 deficit to a 6-4 lead.
Buffalo had the No. 1 powerplay unit last season but got off to a rough start in 2017-18. And they compounded their ineptitude by allowing a league high (tied with the NY Islanders) six shorthanded goals.
Scoring goals has been a serious problem for the Sabres dating back years and this season is no different as they remain dead last in the league averaging 2.38 goals/game. Buffalo has not finished higher that 24th in goals-for the past four years and they're certainly not going to match that this season.
If you're not scoring goals, you better be preventing them and the Sabres haven't done well at that either. Buffalo's team goals-against averaged is 3.31 ranking them 29th in the league.
Put it all together and Buffalo is a 31st place team with a 25-41-12 record (62 points) and a league worst minus-73 goal differential.
There are only four more games left in the season and the Sabres are well on their way to a last place finish for the third time in five seasons. On the bright side of that equation, Buffalo has been stocking their roster with high draft picks and they'll have at least a top-four pick at this year's draft should they finish in last place.

Buffalo Sabres 2017-18 Team Stats--February

In gliding down the team stats, not much has changed for the Buffalo Sabres a team that still occupies the last spot in the Eastern Conference. At this time of year large month-to-month fluctuations are rarely seen as teams are who they are and the sample size is large enough where moves one way or the other are slight at best.
For the Sabres, the month of February saw their defense kick it up a tad as they were trending positive in goals-against and shots-against along with their penalty kill. Buffalo finished the month with a 6-6-2 record which is the first time all season they've been able to hit the .500-point mark. Those 14 points accumulated also equal their best monthly output of the season.
What's intriguing, however, is where those points came from.
In a lost season we're often stretching for a positive, whether individually or as a team, and in an interesting aspect last month, the Sabres went 5-1-1 within the Atlantic Division. Two of those wins came against the league-leading Tampa Bay Lightning who sit atop most statistical categories as chronicled below. Two others came against the Boston Bruins, with one of them coming in Rick Nash's Boston debut. The other win came against the Red Wings in Detroit.
Buffalo has a 20-33-11 overall record this season, yet in the division they're 8-6-3. And what's interesting is that the Sabres are 6-2-1 vs. the division from December thru February after getting buried by their Atlantic division foes in October and November (2-4-2 record.)
Here's the breakdown of the two periods (Oct.+ Nov. / Dec.-Feb):

In a weird schedule quirk (or maybe it was intended,) the Sabres have yet to face the Toronto Maple Leafs and will do so four times over the course of their final 17 games.
Why the discrepancies occurred is up for debate but some of the reasons could include a rookie coach with a overhauled team to begin this season. Perhaps the early season sturggles were the result, as WGR550's Paul Hamilton has alluded to on a number of occasions, of a team that has a tendency to wilt under pressure in games that have meaning, which happens at the beginning of the year. As for the turnaround, perhaps one could say that both player and coach adapted and have learned what works and what doesn't. You could say that the team is a little quicker overall with the influx of some speed into the lineup and/or that teams like Tampa and Boston may have taken them a little lightly.
Regardless, there's a definitive difference in how Buffalo has fared against teams in their division, and the opinion here is that they've been playing better, more focused, hockey against those teams.
Anyone who watched last night's game against the Lighting will tell you that Buffalo actually dominated much of the play. They were harder on the forecheck, quicker to the pucks and defended relentlessly, especially in the second period, which has been their worst period all season. At the end of two periods the Sabres had outshot the Lightning by a 22-12 margin and continued to stifle them until a mid-third period powerplay. They used a similar game plan against Tampa earlier in the month and won 5-3. Buffalo also beat Boston twice in February, wining by scores of 4-2 on the road and 4-1 at home, using the same methods.
The Sabres play seven of their 14 games in March against Atlantic Division foes. They kick the month off tomorrow with a game against the Florida Panthers whom they've yet to beat this season (0-2-0.) From there it's their first matchup of the season against a very good Toronto team on March 5.
For as bad as the Sabres have been all season, pulling off four wins in a row against the top two teams in the division during February is, at the very least, worth noting. In a lost season where on-ice interest has been whittled down to almost nothing, charting how Buffalo does against the Atlantic Division is something to keep an eye on.

Buffalo Sabres 2017-18 Team Stats--January

The Buffalo Sabres began 2018 with an overtime loss to the NY Rangers in the 10th annual Bridgestone Winter Classic at Citi Field. From thence they went on a four-game losing streak and proceeded to drop six of seven. And it wasn't just the fact that six losses were pinned on them, it was also how they lost. The Sabres got thumped three times by a combined 20-7 vs. the Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars with the Stars game being a humiliating 7-1 loss.
Had it not been for a western Canada road trip where they went 3-0-0 in wins over the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks by a combined 11-1 score, January could've gotten even uglier.
When all was said and done Buffalo finished the month 4-7-1.
From a defensive standpoint, the Sabres goaltending took a hit as their 3.30 goals-against average dipped slightly below the 2014-15 tank season (3.28.) Add that poor goaltending performance to a team that's still last in the league in goals-for (2.30/game) and you get manic swings producing a paltry, yet somewhat surprising record for the month.
There was a definitive change in special teams production last month as the powerplay picked up but the penalty kill took a step back. After leading the league in powerplay efficiency last season the Sabres took a dive to second-last and they weren't able to dig out of it until this past month. Buffalo went 11/41 in January with the man advantage (26.8%) and moved from 30th to 26th overall.
That, however, was off-set by their penalty kill which took a precipitous drop from 12th to 23rd overall. The Sabres allowed 10 goals on 31 kills (67.7%) in January bringing their overall kill rate from 81.9% down to 78.6%.
Other than that, it was status quo for the team--last in the division, last in the Eastern Conference, 30th in the league and 30th in goal differential (-51.)
The trade deadline is coming up and a quick note. Sparse rumors have been floating around concerning Buffalo goalie Robin Lehner. After getting shelled through much of the first three weeks of January, Lehner was able to string together back-to-back shutouts against the Oilers and Canucks. Only three teams have worse goaltending than Buffalo. Two of them--the Arizona Coyotes and Ottawa Senators--are firmly planted at or near the bottom of the league with the Sabres. The other is the NY Islanders.
The Islanders have the worst goalie tandem in the league in Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss yet are only one point out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, mainly because they're averaging a third-best 3.27 goals/game.
Isles forward John Tavares is coming up on free agency this summer and they have an extra first and second round pick (via Calgary) in the upcoming NHL Draft. One of those picks (a second rounder) may be used to upgrade goaltending in an attempt to make the playoffs and hopefully have an impact in the post season.

Buffalo Sabres 2017-18 Team Stats--November

The Buffalo Sabres stumble into the month of December with a record we haven't seen since the tank years and in honor of that, we've added that 2013-14 season to our list just so we can see how this team stacks up (or, more appropriately, falls down to that level.)
For posterity's sake, here is their record after 25 games:
2017-18: 6-15-4 (16 points)
2016-17: 9-10-6 (24 points)
2015-16: 10-12-3 (23 points)
2014-15: 9-14-2 (20 points)
2013-14: 5-19-1 (11 points)
It's the 2017-18 NHL and across the league, goals are up. However, in Buffalo it's a different story. In 2015-16 they managed to come to within .80 of the league-leader in goals/game but last season they slumped to about minus-one g/gm. This season the Sabres have reverted back to being about 1.4 goals/game worse than the top team which was where they were during the tank years and, as their record would indicate, that's just not cutting it.
The Sabres could use some help from the powerplay in the goal-scoring department like they did the prior two seasons, but it has been abysmal. Buffalo had the league's best powerplay last season at 25.4% but it has collapsed under the stewardship of the new coaching regime to a second-worst 12.8% conversion rate which is actually worse than their tank-era percentages.
One constant throughout the last four-plus years has been poor 5v5 goal-scoring as they've ranked at or near the bottom of the league every year. Last month they had a bit of a reprieve but it's back down to 28th through November. When you have a bottom-feeding powerplay and only 37 5v5 goals this season, one can see why the Sabres are scoring a league-worst 2.20 goals/game which is smack-dab in the middle between the two tank seasons and the two post-tank seasons.
When a team can't score, they'll need to rely upon stopping goals and the Sabres have done a fairly decent job of that. Yet they'd need a Dominik Hasek-like performance night-in/night-out to save them from being a 30th place team. In November they cut down the shots-against to just under 31 (20th in the league) and their penalty kill has gotten slightly stingier, but the tandem of Robin Lehner and Chad Johnson have a combined goals-against of 3.36/gm. Even in 2014-15, their worst season, all five Buffalo goaltenders managed a 3.28 GAA.
The Sabres begin December with a home-and-home vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins beginning tonight and they're deep in the abyss. Last year at this time the Sabres were seemingly coming back from the depths of despair with the return of Jack Eichel, who was out for the first 21 games of the season. Eichel's high-ankle sprain and other injuries had crippled Dan Bylsma's team, especially on offense but they started out December extremely well and looked to be on the road to recovery. But the Sabres fell apart at the end and finished with 5-6-3 for the month. In December, 2015 under Bylsma they went 5-7-2.
Ironically, they had better December rankings during the tank years going 5-5-2 in 2013 and 6-7-1 in 2014 with a much less talented team and Ted Nolan as head coach.
Go figure.

Buffalo Sabres 2017-18 Team Stats--October

The month of October was a pretty rough month for the Buffalo Sabres as their 3-7-2 record would indicate. For a bit of perspective, the Sabres also had three wins in October last season without Jack Eichel and Evander Kane, amongst others, but they only played eight games because the World Cup set the season back. After 12 games last season, the Sabres were 4-5-3 which is slightly better.
Buffalo went into this season with a new head coach, Phil Housley, a revamped defense corps and a new style. All of that got them in to serious trouble early as they stumbled out of the gate to a 0-4-1. After losing in the shootout to the Montreal Canadiens, the Sabres forgot how to play defense and got shellacked in consecutive games while allowing six goals against in each. It would seem that the players, in their rush to find offense, forgot how to play defense and in the ensuing nine games Housley has been stressing more work without the puck and more attention to the defensive zone.
It's worked, to an extent, as the Sabres have generally played some pretty good hockey except for a couple of clunkers--a home loss to Vancouver and a loss at Columbus.
As we look at the stats, the Sabres are in the lower half of the league in every category except the penalty kill which ranks 11th at an 82.5% kill rate. That's about it for the bright spots.
The Sabres have been suffering on defense (3.58 goals-against, 27th in the league) and on offense (2.42 goals/game, 29th) leading to a -15 goal differential which ranks 30th out of 31 teams. Buffalo is getting their shots, but is having trouble finishing as they sit 28th in the league with a 7.67 shooting percentage a number that's below last season's moribund 7.99 shooting percentage. The powerplay, which was No. 1 last season (24.5%) could really help but those two units have stumbled although the PP is climbing towards respectability, a 14.3% conversion rate is 23rd-best in the league.
Much of the thought process involved in trying to turn this ship around has the Sabres beginning their transition game with solid defense, which has been happening more frequently as of late. Housley stressed that point by mentioning the surprising 5-2 Buffalo Bills NFL football team. “What is the one thing they’re talking about the Buffalo Bills?” said yesterday to the gathered media. “It’s their defense. That’s what’s changing things for them, it’s creating turnovers. … We have to take pride in that area.”
The Sabres will get some help in the defensive area as Justin Falk is expected to make his first start of the season tomoorow night in Arizona. The defensive-defenseman with good puck-moving ability has been sidelined all season with a lower body injury.
Housley mentioned yesterday that he believes his Sabres have produced more scoring chances 80% of the time this season and that they "have a lot of talent in that room to win hockey games.” But it all comes back to defense. “It’s our play without the puck that has to get better," he continued, "we have to take pride in our defense. We have to take pride in the fact if it’s 1-0 or 1-1 or 2-2 that we can play in those games. Right now, we’re the ones cracking.”
He did point out that the Sabres are 3-3-1 since their horrendous start. Which is a good thing. But they've got to be better than the stats below.
